THE STITCHES CAME OUT!!! Hooooooooraaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyy… one more step (har-har) towards recovery. We are 3 weeks in, and today Dr. Stein popped his head in and was really blown away by how good the foot looks. When the surgeon is excited, that’s a very good thing.

Want to see what it looks like? Here’s your chance to bail out if you’re squeamish, but I promise, it looks less franken-footy than it did last week.

Mostly.

Last chance…

The top and inside of my right foot, stitch-free at last: long suture lines traced in fading purple marker running along the inside of my midfoot and big toe, yellow-green bruising around the ankle, and the wire pin still poking out of the tip of my second toe. Looking down my shin at the outside of my right foot: a healing incision, scabbed over but free of threads, curving along the outside edge above my heel, with yellow-green bruising washing up over my ankle. The full top-down view: every suture line freshly de-threaded, purple marker and yellow bruising slowly fading, bruised toes, and the pin still standing proudly out of my second toe.

Ok, now that the pics are out of the way, here’s where we are. I will return in 3 weeks, on the 13th of August, to get the shish-k-bob out of my toe, take full x-rays, and, fingers crossed, get the thumbs up to go to partial weight bearing. If things continue to improve at the current rate, that’s highly likely. Last time we had to go to 8 weeks, but the foot wasn’t doing quite as well that go-round. I’m guessing the cleaner approach and tight recovery protocol have been helping a lot, as have my peptides, which research says can definitely speed healing.

Anyway, this is all good. I was also told to wash the shin and wrap it in a different material, because I’m getting some real pain from rubbing against the ace bandage when I’m on the iWalk. To the point that it’s red, inflamed, and itchy/patchy. So that’s the next thing I need to watch. But the goal today was simply to get those little pesky threads out (and there were a LOT) and get the medical clearance to keep on keeping on.

Mission accomplished. Three weeks of holding this foot together, and those threads have officially been relieved of duty. The hardware stays a while longer, the shin gets a new wardrobe, and I get to spend the next three weeks doing exactly what I’ve been doing: elevating, healing, and behaving myself. But today, at least on paper, this foot is officially cut loose.

Firsts & Wins
  • Every last stitch is OUT (and there were a lot of them)
  • Dr. Stein popped in and was blown away by how good the foot looks at 3 weeks
  • Medical clearance to keep on keeping on; next stop August 13
