Life Is a Highway

A tabby cat sitting in the driver's seat of a car, both front paws gripping the steering wheel, staring intently at the road as scenery blurs past the window.

Mobility
Driving again, and still in the boot, but earning some time each day in the walking CAM brace. Walking under my own power, but slowly; the big toe and second toe joints protest every footfall.
Mood
Freed and impatient, minding my cranky toes

I started driving again this past weekend and I’d like to take a moment and recognize how freeing it is to be able to get behind the wheel of my own car, and go anywhere I want. Which, to be fair, is only to physical therapy and to the dog park, because I have not yet been cleared to walk the dogs on their leashes to the park which is 4/10th of a mile away from my house with a nice sidewalk. So we drive and honestly, I don’t hate it.

Mainly because the walking cam brace is awesome. But my foot is not as ready for the brace as the rest of me is so I end up walking slowly in it, largely because my big toe and my second, no-longer-hammer toe, are CRANK-EE. Bending two very small, nerve filled joints with every footfall is an exercise in patience and I always forget just how much a small area can have big pains.

But with each new day comes one more day closer to getting back to running so honestly, I’m ok with it. At least I get some time away from the boot and my hope is that next week, when I check in with my ortho, I get the all clear to start to transition out of the boot, permanently. Toes and fingers crossed.

Until then, we have new PT exercises that include stretchy band flexion, inversion and eversion work, step downs and quick step front loading, all things that start to wake up the new ankle tendon and get it ready for what will inevitably be a return to pavement pounding, hopefully next year. I apologize ahead of time to my body parts but I wouldn’t have fixed all this stuff if I had just planned on sitting on my couch for the rest of my life. 🙂

Feet, get ready, because here I come…
