Here Comes the Sun

View down a sun lounger on a patio: a sleek reddish-brown vizsla dog stretched out asleep against a pair of sunlit legs, one foot wrapped in a white surgical bandage propped on the chair.I skipped yesterday’s entry but I did not skip all the required stuff like stretching and eating healthy and soaking up the sun. I realized I was feeling a bit… hobbit-y? I’ve spent so much time in the basement, in my little recovery lair that I was going whole days without setting foot outside. And even though it’s been as hot as the surface of the sun, skipping out on sun exposure is actually not great for mental health. So Booger and I took the opportunity to get our vitamin D both days. Fun fact: Vitamin D helps boost your body’s ability to absorb calcium so it does double duty as a primary and secondary healing agent.

The black cushioned knee platform of an iWalk 2.0 hands-free crutch, photographed on a white background, with the red 'iWALK 2.0' logo across the padded top.I also got a new (but used) shin bed for the iWalk. I’ve had that thing for 9 years and it’s seen me through 3.5 procedures now, and it wasn’t until this time around that I realized it’s been flattening into a rock hard slab of what I can only describe as granite under my boney leg. I’d like to give a little shout-out to those packrats who sell parts on eBay for outdated and obsolete things that we just can’t live without. After a few cocktails, my other half managed to get it switched out last night in under 30 minutes, sans instructions. So now we are back to peg-legging it in comfort and style.

Finally, I made it to my stylist for a few snips and streaks. And a blow out while sitting in a comfy chair. I’ve gotten to the point where I don’t even put on makeup most days because I just don’t feel like dealing with it while balancing on one leg for a day of work meetings where I’m largely off camera. It’s nice to let it go for a bit but I also recognize that I miss getting “gussied up” so having someone else do that for me was a welcome change.

It’s amazing how much small things become so important when you put so much on hold and slow down, taking the time to soak them up. It may not have been an exciting weekend, but it sure was a nice one.

So no, I don’t have a dramatic milestone to report this time. Just sun on my skin, a softer seat under my knee, and hair that finally bounces. Sometimes recovery isn’t a leap forward; it’s just remembering to take care of the whole human attached to the healing foot. I’ll take it.
